RECONSTRUCTION OF LEIF ERICSON BRIDGE (Belt Parkway)
Project Highlights
The project scope included demolishing and re-building the 6-lane Leif Ericson bridge on the Belt Parkway. The project was divided into three phases to minimize impacts to the public and maintain traffic flow. Half the existing bridge was demolished and replaced with prestressed concrete deck and beams, during which traffic was shifted according to the MPT plan to the remaining portion of the bridge. After the first half of the bridge was re-built, traffic was shifted to the new portion while the existing portion was being demolished and replaced.
This project was challenging from a logistic point of view, as the work had to be completed within a compressed schedule, while maintaining traffic and minimizing impacts to the public. Restani’s teams were organized in a way that ensured work was maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in order to complete the client’s requirements in the shortest possible timeframe.
